Bona
Vacantia
The work
undertaken by the Bona Vacantia Division is unique within government.
Bona vacantia,
the legal name for 'ownerless goods', comprises property and rights that
have no owner other than the Crown. The Treasury Solicitor is nominated
by the Sovereign for the collection and administration of those bona vacantia
property and rights vesting in the Crown in England, Wales and Northern
Ireland. The two forms of bona vacantia of greatest current relevance
are the estates of persons who die intestate and with no entitled relatives
and the collection of the assets of dissolved companies.
Visit the
Bona Vacantia
Website for fuller details about the services offered including the
guidance on discretionary payments in Estates cases to assist those who
wish to make an application for discretionary payments from an estate.
Warning:the
Bona Vacantia Division of the Treasury Solicitor's Department does not
employ agents to act on its behalf to locate beneficiaries of estates
or unclaimed assets such as safety deposit boxes. Bogus e-mails are circulating,
in which reference is made to the Treasury Solicitor.
If you have received an unsolicited e-mail from an unknown source claiming
to be acting for the Treasury Solicitor in this way, please contact this
office for further advice (BVinfo.user@tsol.gsi.gov.uk)
